German Passive Voice: Werden, Wurde, and the Mysterious Zustandspassiv
The German passive promotes what was the object and uses werden + past participle: Das Haus wird gebaut (it's being built). Past tense swaps werden → wurde (wurde gebaut); perfect stacks three verbs (ist gebaut worden). A second passive with sein — the Zustandspassiv (Die Tür ist geöffnet) — describes state, not action.
German loves the passive — instructions, news, bureaucracy, science all run on it. Die Straße wird gesperrt tells you what matters (the street gets closed) without caring who closes it.
Two passives exist: the action passive with werden and the state passive with sein. Learners who only know the first keep misreading signs; this guide covers both plus every tense you'll actually meet.
Formation: the core pattern
| Tense | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Present | wird + Partizip II | Der Brief wird geschrieben. |
| Präteritum | wurde + Partizip II | Der Brief wurde geschrieben. |
| Perfect | ist + Partizip II + worden | Der Brief ist geschrieben worden. |
| Future | wird + Partizip II + werden | Der Brief wird geschrieben werden. |
Worden, not geworden
In perfect-tense passives, werden loses its ge-: Der Kuchen ist gegessen worden. This trips up nearly everyone exactly once. Learn it as a fixed chunk: ist ... worden.
Agents: von versus durch
- von + person/agent: Das Buch wurde von Grass geschrieben.
- durch + means/instrument/force: Die Tür wurde durch Druck geöffnet.
- Most German passives omit the agent entirely — that's their whole point
Modals in the passive
Modal + participle + werden stacks at the end — heavy but common in official language.
- Die Rechnung muss bis Freitag bezahlt werden.
- Hier darf nicht geraucht werden.
- Das kann später erledigt werden.
Zustandspassiv: state, not event
| Vorgangspassiv (action) | Zustandspassiv (state) |
|---|---|
| Die Tür wird geöffnet. — someone is opening it | Die Tür ist geöffnet. — it stands open |
| Das Essen wird gekocht. | Das Essen ist gekocht. |
| answers: what's happening? | answers: what's the situation? |
Impersonal es-passive
- Es wird getanzt. — dancing is happening (es is a placeholder subject)
- When another element leads, es vanishes: Heute wird getanzt.
- You'll hear this constantly at events: Jetzt wird gegessen!
Reading strategy
Train yourself to spot the bracket: finite werden-form opens, participle closes. Everything between is detail. With that habit, even bureaucratic monsters like Es wurde beschlossen, dass die Gebühr angepasst werden soll become navigable at speed.
Frequently asked questions
Is the passive less common in German than English?
No — more common. Official notices, recipes (Es wird gerührt), news, and academic writing all favor it. Learners underuse it because English teaching often discourages passives.
How do I make a passive from dative verbs like helfen?
Dative objects STAY dative and the sentence has no nominative subject: Mir wurde geholfen. (I was helped.) Ihm wird vertraut. Small set, high frequency.
Worden or geworden?
Worden inside perfect passives (ist gemacht worden). Geworden when werden itself is the main verb meaning 'become' (er ist Arzt geworden). Different jobs, different forms.
When do I use Zustandspassiv instead of an adjective?
Zustandspassiv emphasizes the result of an action (die Tür ist geöffnet = someone opened it). A plain adjective just describes. The line blurs in practice — natives pick whichever sounds lighter.
