In German

H

Meaning: the letter H, pronounced "hah"

Example sentences

  • HwieHaus.

    H as in Haus (house).

  • DasHausistalt.

    The house is old.

Grammar note

German “H” is pronounced at the start of a word, same as English. But after a vowel (as in “sehen”, to see, or “Ruhe”, quiet) it's silent and just lengthens the vowel before it.

Common mistake

Don't pronounce every “H” — after a vowel it's usually silent, just a signal that the vowel is long, not a sound of its own.
