In German
und
Meaning: and
Formal or informal? “Und” is the everyday word for and. It joins words and whole clauses. Unlike “aber”, it doesn't change the verb order.
Example sentences
Brot und Käse, bitte.
Bread and cheese, please.
Ich lerne Deutsch und Englisch.
I'm learning German and English.
Er kommt und ich gehe.
He comes, and I go.
Grammar note
“Und” is a conjunction and doesn't change. It joins two main clauses without changing word order, so “Er kommt und ich gehe” keeps the verb in second place in each clause.
Common mistake
Don't confuse “und” (and) with “uns” (us). They look similar, but one is a conjunction and the other is a pronoun.
