In German
Wann
Meaning: when
Formal or informal? “Wann” asks about a time. “Wenn” means “if” or “whenever”, so don't swap them.
Example sentences
Wannkommstdu?
When are you coming?
WannbeginntderFilm?
When does the film start?
Ichweißnicht,wannerkommt.
I don't know when he's coming.
Grammar note
In a question, “wann” comes at the start with the verb second: “Wann kommst du?”. In a sentence that describes an event, the verb goes to the end: “…, wann er kommt.”
Common mistake
Don't use “wenn” for “when” in a question. “Wann kommst du?” asks when, while “Wenn du kommst” means “if you come”.
