Grammar note

“Zwischen” is two-way and needs two reference points. Akkusativ for movement into a position between them, Dativ for already being there — including the Dativ plural “-n” on “Häusern”.

Common mistake

Don't use “zwischen” with only one reference point — that's what “neben” is for. “Zwischen” always needs an “X und Y” or a plural (“zwischen den Häusern”).

Frequently asked questions

Why does “Häusern” end in “-n” here?

Dativ plural nouns add “-n” if they don't already end in “-n” or “-s” — “die Häuser” becomes “den Häusern”.

Can “zwischen” be used for time?

Yes, like “zwischen zwei und drei Uhr” (between two and three o'clock).
