“Nie” is the adverb “never”. It sits near the verb, as “nicht” does, but it changes the meaning completely.
Common mistake
Don't confuse “nie” (never) with “nicht” (not). “Ich war nicht in Berlin” means “I wasn't in Berlin” (at a time), while “Ich war nie in Berlin” means “I've never been to Berlin”.
