In German
klein
Meaning: small
Formal or informal? “Klein” means small in size. For a small amount, learners often use “wenig” (little), so the two are not interchangeable.
Example sentences
DasisteinkleinesKind.
That is a small child.
WirwohnenineinerkleinenStadt.
We live in a small town.
DerHundistsehrklein.
The dog is very small.
Grammar note
Before a noun, “klein” takes agreeing endings: “ein kleiner Hund” (masculine), “eine kleine Stadt” (feminine), “ein kleines Kind” (neuter). After “einer” (dative feminine) it's “einer kleinen Stadt”.
Common mistake
Don't use “klein” for a small amount. Say “wenig Geld” (little money), not “kleines Geld”. “Klein” is for size only.
