Schatten

Meaning: shadow

Example sentences

  • WirsitzenimSchattendesBaumes.

We sit in the shadow of the tree.

  • DerSchattenwirdamAbendlänger.

  • ImSommersucheichimmerdenSchatten.

Grammar note

“Der Schatten” is masculine, and unusually its plural looks identical to the singular: “die Schatten” — no ending change at all. It also means “shade” (as in the cool, sun-blocked spot, not just the dark shape).

Common mistake

Don't confuse “Schatten” (shadow) with the similar-looking “Schaden” (damage) — one letter apart but completely unrelated meanings.
