In German
Sonne
Meaning: sun
Formal or informal? “Sonne” is the sun. For sunshine, use “der Sonnenschein”. Be careful with “Sohn” (son), which sounds similar.
Example sentences
Die Sonne scheint heute.
The sun is shining today.
Im Sommer ist die Sonne sehr stark.
In summer the sun is very strong.
Wir sitzen in der Sonne.
We are sitting in the sun.
Grammar note
“Die Sonne” is feminine, so it takes “die” and “eine”. In a location phrase with “in”, the dative is “in der Sonne”.
Common mistake
Don't say “der Sonne”. The article is “die Sonne”, feminine. And don't confuse “Sonne” (sun) with “Sohn” (son) or “Sonntag” (Sunday).
