In German
Tag
Meaning: day
Formal or informal? “Guten Tag” is a formal daytime greeting. For the morning use “Guten Morgen”, and for the evening “Guten Abend”.
Example sentences
GutenTag!
Good day!
DerTagwarsehrlang.
The day was very long.
IchkommeindreiTagenzurück.
I'll be back in three days.
Grammar note
“Der Tag” is masculine, so it takes “der” and “ein”. The plural is “die Tage”, and in the dative it's “in drei Tagen” (in three days).
Common mistake
Use “Guten Tag” in the daytime, but “Guten Morgen” before noon. The two aren't interchangeable at breakfast time.
