Grammar note

“Hinter” is two-way: Akkusativ when something moves to a position behind something, Dativ when it's already there.

Common mistake

Don't use “hinter” for “after” in time (as in “after lunch”) — that's “nach”. “Hinter” is only spatial, about physical position.
