Grammar note

“Fallen” is an irregular verb: “ich falle”, “du fällst”, “er/sie/es fällt”, with an umlaut in the second and third person. It uses “sein” in the perfect tense: “ich bin gefallen”.

Common mistake

English “fall” has two other, unrelated German translations: the season (American “fall”) is “der Herbst” (see our autumn page), and the grammatical/legal sense (“in that case”) is “der Fall” — neither is the verb “fallen” on this page.
