In German
Stadt
Meaning: city
Formal or informal? “Stadt” means city or town. A small town is “ein Städtchen”. For a village, use “Dorf”.
Example sentences
BerlinisteinegroßeStadt.
Berlin is a big city.
WirfahrenheuteindieStadt.
We are going into town today.
IchwohnegerninderStadt.
I like living in the city.
Grammar note
“Die Stadt” is feminine, so it takes “die” and “eine”. The plural is “die Städte”. Use “in die Stadt” for going into town and “in der Stadt” for being in town.
Common mistake
Don't confuse “Stadt” with “Staat” (state or country). “Ich fahre in die Stadt” means going into town, not going to a country.
