In German
Haus
Meaning: house
Formal or informal? “Haus” is the building. For “home” in the sense of where you live, use “zu Hause” (“at home”) or “die Wohnung” for a flat.
Example sentences
WirwohnenineinemgroßenHaus.
We live in a big house.
DasHaushinterderKircheistalt.
The house behind the church is old.
IchbinheutedenganzenTagzuHause.
I'm at home all day today.
Grammar note
“Das Haus” is neuter, so it takes “das” and “ein”. The plural is “die Häuser”, with an umlaut. After “in” for location, the dative is “in einem Haus”.
Common mistake
Say “zu Hause” for “at home”, not “nach Haus” or “im Haus”. “Im Haus” means inside the building, not at home.
