In German
hoffen
Meaning: to hope
Example sentences
Ichhoffe,dassesmorgennichtregnet.
I hope it doesn't rain tomorrow.
WirhoffenaufgutesWetter.
We're hoping for good weather.
Grammar note
“Hoffen” is a regular weak verb: “ich hoffe, du hoffst, er hofft”. Followed by a clause it takes “dass” (“ich hoffe, dass…”); followed by a thing it takes “auf” + accusative (“hoffen auf gutes Wetter”).
Common mistake
Don't say “ich hoffe für” for hoping for something — German uses “hoffen auf” + accusative (“hoffen auf gutes Wetter”), not “hoffen für”.
