In German
Bad
Meaning: bathroom
Formal or informal? “Bad” is the bathroom at home, the room with a bath or shower. For a public toilet, use “die Toilette”, which is a different word.
Example sentences
Das Bad ist neben der Küche.
The bathroom is next to the kitchen.
Ich putze das Bad am Samstag.
I clean the bathroom on Saturday.
Im Bad gibt es eine Dusche.
There's a shower in the bathroom.
Grammar note
“Das Bad” is neuter, so it takes “das” and “ein”. The plural is “die Bäder”, with an umlaut on the “a”. “Im Bad” means in the bathroom.
Common mistake
Don't use “das Bad” for a public toilet. For that, say “die Toilette”. “Bad” is the room at home, and in a restaurant you need “die Toilette”.
