In German
links
Meaning: left
Formal or informal? “Links” is the direction left. “Übrig” means left over, and “verlassen” means to leave a place, so don't mix them up.
Example sentences
DieKircheistlinks.
The church is on the left.
BiegenSieanderAmpellinksab.
Turn left at the traffic lights.
AufderlinkenSeitestehteinAuto.
There's a car on the left side.
Grammar note
“Links” is an adverb for direction: “nach links”, “links abbiegen”. As an adjective before a noun it takes an ending: “die linke Seite” (the left side).
Common mistake
Don't use “verlassen” for left in the sense of direction. “Ich verlasse das Haus” means I leave the house, and “links” is direction.
