In German

dass

Meaning: that (introducing a clause)

Example sentences

  • Ichweiß,dassdumüdebist.

    I know that you're tired.

  • Siehofft,dassesmorgensonnigwird.

She hopes that it will be sunny tomorrow.

  • Esistschade,dassernichtkommt.

Grammar note

“Dass” (with double s, not “das”) introduces a subordinate clause and, like “weil”, pushes its verb to the end: “dass du müde bist”, not “dass du bist müde”.

Common mistake

Don't confuse “dass” (the conjunction “that”) with “das” (the article/pronoun “the”/“that”, single s) — they sound identical but are spelled differently and have different jobs in the sentence.
