In German

wenn

Meaning: if, whenever

Example sentences

  • Wennesregnet,bleibeichzuHause.

If it rains, I'll stay home.

  • Rufmichan,wennduankommst.

    Call me when you arrive.

  • WennichZeithabe,leseichgern.

When(ever) I have time, I like to read.

Grammar note

“Wenn” sends its verb to the end like “weil” and “dass”: “wenn es regnet”, not “wenn es regnet ist”. It covers both “if” (a condition) and “whenever” (a repeated or general time) — German doesn't separate these the way English does.

Common mistake

Don't reach for “wann” instead of “wenn” — “wann” is the question word (“when?”, asking for a time), while “wenn” is the conjunction for “if/whenever” inside a sentence.
